Working with our community to improve financial capability is a cornerstone of our work at QSA. For over 10 years, Made of Money has shown that untangling our feelings and behaviours, and improving communication within households, are key to transforming familial relationships to money and each other.
With our new project, Adds Up, QSA is excited to extend our decade of experience to develop financial capability support for families involved in the criminal justice system.
The links between poverty and crime are complex and powerful. By limiting choice and opportunities, poverty is one of the most important conditions impacting crime.
Positive family relationships are a recognised factor in preventing re-offending. However, when a relative is involved in the criminal justice system this can have a negative impact on a family’s financial stability. Families are vulnerable to financial exclusion, poverty and debt.
Pressures on families throughout the prison term can have a negative effect on relationships with consequences for the family on release.
Adds Up aims to support families in the criminal justice system with the opportunity to improve their financial awareness and decision making, and strengthen family relationships.
Support focuses on the specific financial challenges faced due to involvement in the criminal justice system, and the emotions, behaviours and communication skills to develop improved family relationships regarding finances.
Adds Up is at the development stage and we welcome input from families, friends or organisations involved in the criminal justice system.
